Directors UK Urges Improved Residuals From Streamers & Threatens Action If They Don’t Come To The Table (Deadline)
The battle for improved streaming residuals in the U.S. has at least partly been won but in the UK it is only just beginning. Deadline can reveal that Directors UK (DUK), the body and collection society representing British directors, has written to Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Paramount, Apple and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) in the past few weeks seeking greater royalties for its plus-8,000 members. And in a move that raises the stakes, DUK’s letter said that the body could potentially withhold its members copyright from the streamers in future if they don’t come to the table and attempt to strike deals, we understand.
BeIN Rides To Ligue 1 Rescue Again With Late Deal Across 27 Markets (Sportcal)
Qatari pay-TV broadcast heavyweight BeIN Sports unveiled a last-minute, 27-market deal for the top two tiers of French soccer, Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, on the eve of the new season. The tie-up was announced by BeIN hours before the start of the 2024-25 campaign and stretches across the US, Canada, Turkiye, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) through 2028-29.

Brazil has seen a decline in both free-to-air viewing and pay-TV subscriptions, while streaming services have surged in popularity and are now present in over 40 per cent of TV households. According to an IBGE survey, out of the 78.3 million Brazilian homes in 2023, 4.5 million did not have a TV set, or 5.7 per cent of the total, up from 5.1 per cent in 2022.

On the eve of the 2024-25 campaign, which begins on August 16, Canal Plus has renewed the rights for the next five seasons, preventing a blackout in one of the league’s strongest regional markets. The broadcaster, through its Canal Plus Afrique arm, has shown Ligue 1 in French-speaking Sub-Saharan Africa since the beginning of the 2018-19 season, after it purchased the rights for the cycle through the 2023-24 season for around €80 million ($95.4 million) per year.

MBC1 and the Shahid streaming platform are gearing up for the debut of Al Ameel, an adaptation of the Turkish series Insider (Içerde).
