And now to the weekly newsletter.
Even though it premieres in a few days, it’s likely you haven’t read much about the upcoming Netflix action series Who Is Erin Carter? Written and showrun by Jack Lothian, the seven-episode series follows the story of Erin Carter, a British substitute teacher who lives in Barcelona with her husband and daughter. Her quiet life is unexpectedly blow apart during a robbery when one of the gunmen recognizes her, threatening to expose a secret life she’s managed to keep hidden from her family.
The series is one of those breezy, international action dramas that is turning into a Netflix specialty and I absolutely loved it. Erin Carter is played by Evin Ahmad, a Kurdish-Swedish actress perhaps best known in the U.S. for her role on Snabba Cash and she says that role helped her to get cast in this series:
How do you think the success of Snabba Cash and playing Leya has opened doors for you?
Evin Ahmad: It did change my career because it’s given me opportunities to audition for certain projects and is also how I got “Who Is Erin Carter?” One of the producers Rob (Bullock) saw Snabba Cash and he was like, ‘Let’s put her on tape.’ I think it’s about timing as well. When the pandemic came, Sweden was probably the only country that was still shooting. I was shooting the first season of Snabba Cash while every other country was in lockdown and the benefit of streaming services like Netflix is that people can watch these shows everywhere and people will now go to shows in their original languages. I had never in my life thought that people would watch a show in Swedish, but they did and they loved it. Ricky Gervais loved Snabba Cash season one and two and tweeted about it!
Snabba Cash opened up a lot of doors for me and it’s also how I got my American agents and led to my receiving a Shooting Star honor at the Berlin Film Festival, which I’m so grateful for.
Who Is Erin Carter? is your first English speaking lead. How many languages are you fluent in?
Evin Ahmad: I’m obviously fluent in Swedish. I was born and raised in Sweden. I know some Kurdish because my dad and my mum are both Kurdish, and on top of that, they speak different dialects because my dad is Kurdish from Iraq. I’ve also spent summers in Syria, which is how I learned to speak Arabic, not fluently but I understand it well. I studied Spanish in school too.
Who Is Erin Carter? premieres Thursday, August 24th on Netflix. I’ll have more interviews and other coverage of the show closer to the premiere on AllYourScreens and I’ll also link to those in the regular TooMuchTV newsletter.
