Too Much TV: Your TV Talking Points For Thursday, June 16th, 2022
Is YouTube more white noise than a rival to other streamers?
Here's everything you need to know about the world of television for Thursday, June 16th, 2022.
TEENS AND YOUTUBE
Today is my son Sam's 17th birthday and having a teenager brings a great deal of unpredictability into your life. But also a lot of joy and oddly, it's also helpful to me to see first-hand how teens consume media. Despite the fact that we have pretty much every streaming service available, his streaming menu is hit and miss. Some anime, a few action movies and history specials. But his primary video diet is centered around YouTube and it's fascinating to see what he watches.
He's a huge sports fan, but in most cases rather than watching the entire game live, he'll check out the 8-12 minute official highlight recaps that all of the major sports leagues put together. Like a lot of teens, he also watches a mix of historical explainer videos, gaming channels and music video clip episodes such as "100 Top Rock Ballads," which is nothing more than 100 five-second clips edited together into a list.
The interesting thing is that more often than not he uses YouTube in the same way I used the radio growing up. It's essentially background noise and he frequently has it on while he's doing something else. Lately, one of his favorites choices is to put on one of the multiple hour-long videos comprised of instrumental music from various anime shows.
Which points to a big challenge for the major streamers. Yes, creating scripted YA programming is essential for locking in the younger generations. But is there other programming they can also commission that would allow subscribers to use the videos as "lean back" choices? Creating videos that aren't meant to be focused on seems counter-intuitive, but there is certainly an audience for that. And it's an audience that is also open to scripted programming, depending on their mood.
It would interesting to see what the engagement would be on a two-hour video of music from Netflix original anime. Or whether kids would frequently watch a Disney+ musical segment clip show similar to the old straight-to-video Disney Sing-A-Long Songs.
