Too Much TV: Your TV Talking Points For Monday, January 2nd, 2023
The entertainment industry's holiday break is almost over.
Here's everything you need to know about the world of television for Monday, January 2nd, 2023.
THE CONTENT PURGES CONTINUE
The various streaming services are continuing their content purge, as they realign their catalogs and move some stuff for licensing.
Warner Brothers Discovery has removed more of its animation titles, although it's interesting to note that they are being very selective in the deletions. As of yesterday, seasons sixteen through thirty-one of the Looney Tunes shorts (244 titles), seasons three through five of The Smurfs, seasons four through six of The Flintstones (78 episodes) and the series run of The Scooby Doo Show have been removed. I've been told by readers that some other random seasons of other animated shows have disappeared as well, but I'm trying to confirm that.
It's possible the titles will eventually show up on the proposed WBD AVOD service. But given some of the challenges in monetizing programming that might be watched by kids, I'm wondering if the episodes might be bundled into some sort of a licensing deal.
And in what is a real surprise, Starz has pulled Dangerous Liaisons, Becoming Elizabeth and Run the World. No official explanation has been provided, but I suspect it might have something to do with the previously announced split-up of Lionsgate and Starz.
SPEAKING OF CONTENT PURGES
A number of cool, obscure television titles have expired from Crackle. Nearly all of them are Sony TV titles and while some or all of them might return, given that some of the titles that had been set to expire have been renewed (such as Just Shoot Me) that doesn't bode well for the fate of the expired shows.
Just another reminder that Sony TV should just bundle all of these titles into a FAST channel or a stand-alone AVOD service. I am available for consulting work....
And by the way, here is the list of TV titles that expired from Crackle on 12/31:
Beautiful People
