Too Much TV: Your TV Talking Points For Friday, November 3rd, 2023
A quick update on the SAG-AFTRA negotiations. And it's Friday and I'm annoyed.
Here's everything you need to know about the world of television for Friday, November 3rd, 2023.
TODAY'S BRIEF SAG-AFTRA & AMPTP NEGOTATION RECAP
Maybe it's because it's the Friday of a very long week, but I am a bit annoyed.
First, the latest SAG-AFTRA & AMPTP negotiation update. The studios have delivered their response to the union and talks will continue this weekend, after SAG-AFTRA negotiators spend time tonight working through the details of the proposal.
I checked around quite a bit this evening and no one I spoke with on the union side had much in the way of details on the new studio proposal and/or hadn't seen it. I spoke with someone on the studio side, who walked me through some details, which I won't mention here. In part because the conversation was off-the-record. But also because I have no way of knowing whether it's an accurate representation of the proposal. The source did characterize the new studio proposal on background as having "made substantive moves in order to make a deal." So take that with a grain of salt. But it does match when I wrote last night, that the studio proposal was going to try and provide some framework that could hopefully lead to a deal this weekend.
And honestly, there's not much more to say at this point.
But as I was reading the trade coverage of the negotiations tonight, I found myself getting more and more annoyed.
As a reader, I hate when a journalist spends a lot of time self-congratulating themselves about what a fabulous job they are doing. And I get it, it's a fine line. It's completely fair to highlight when you broke a story or remind readers that you were right about an issue that most other people missed. But it's easy to take that pride entirely too far and drift into the annoying category.
But I am incredibly proud of the reporting I have been doing in this newsletter and on my website since the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes began. I have had a number of people upgrade to a paid subscription, and mention that the reason they are doing so is that they want to support my work. I think I have perspective you won't see in the trades or many other major entertainment news sites. And modestly speaking, I think I have often had a lot better sources and insight than many of my much-bigger rivals.
And as a small, independent one-person media company, I am accustomed to having to fight to get attention. Most of the growth in this newsletter has been due to readers sharing it, as well as some referrals from outlets such as The Ankler. My reporting is not going to get coverage in the trades, and that's fine.
What drove me nuts today is reading pieces that obviously used my reporting for the framework of their pieces. I read one story today that included part of a quote from last night's newsletter in quotations, without mentioning where the quote originated from. And I just read a piece in one of the trades that was touted as "exclusive." But most of it is just a rehash of what I have written in the past couple of days.
This is not to say that I think anyone is necessarily using my stuff without attribution. But they also shouldn't be claiming it's "exclusive."
As I said, I think I am primarily annoyed because it's Friday and I am tired. And my guess is that I will have plenty of negotiations-related work to do this weekend.
SPEAKING OF YESTERDAY'S NEWSLETTER
There were a couple of interesting comments about my argument that Max should lean into "Noirvember" and I wanted to pass them along:

* The WGA West Board of Directors told members in a letter today that the union’s longtime Executive Director David Young is exiting when his contract expires. Ellen Stutzman, who served as WGAW’s chief negotiator during its 148-day strike this year, has been promoted to the post.
