Too Much TV: Your TV Talking Points For Tuesday, December 20th, 2022
More TV is disappearing from HBO Max in January.
Here's everything you need to know about the world of television for Tuesday, December 20th, 2022.
THE LAUNCH OF NETFLIX'S AD-SUPPORTED TIER STARTS OFF SLOW
I'm not sure that anyone had a real sense of how Netflix's new ad-supported service would be received by consumers. But based on data from measurement and analytics company Antenna, the new plan is getting off to a slow start.
Antenna finds that 9% of Netflix Sign-ups in the U.S. in November were to the "Basic with Ads" plan, making it the least popular of their plan options. In addition to the Basic with Ads Subscribers who signed-up for Netflix, Antenna observed 0.1% of Netflix’s existing U.S. Subscribers switching to the Basic with Ads plan in November.
There seem to be a number of factors at play here. Antenna notes that streaming services that launch with an ad-supported plan tend to get a better response for that option. And even though the response to Netflix's new plan is a bit underwhelming, the trend tends to be for the ad-supported tier to become more popular with time.
Netflix is also dealing with some challenges that are specific to its service. It was unable to license some of its biggest titles for the ad-supported service ahead of the launch.
And more importantly for parents, while the new plan won't include advertising in kids-oriented programming, subscriber also aren't able to download content. Which makes the service a lot less valuable for parents with small kids.
Additionally, Netflix’s lower-cost ad-supported subscription didn’t work with Apple TV or Apple TV 4K devices at the launch.

Shit. I have been going through a slow and steady run of B5 and PoI. I am on the 4th seasons of each, but now, I have to primarily focus on them. And I have been doing a DCAU run through and finished Superman, but have not finished BTAS and wanted to before JL. I'll have to try and squeeze that in.
