Here's everything you need to know about the world of television for Friday, July 12th, 2024:
GREETINGS FROM PASADENA
This is a short newsletter because of the late TCA Awards. I'll have a bonus newsletter this weekend in order to cover the weekend sessions.
THE 40TH ANNUAL TCA AWARDS
Tonight was the first live TCA awards show in five years and that gave the event another level of importance. Both critics and industry folks were just happy to add one more "normal" thing to the list.
Shogun was the big winner and there was a lot of genuine emotion in the acceptances and even a few tears. The TCA Awards come early in the annual awards show cycle, and this was the first chance that people from the show had the opportunity to revel in a bit of industry recognition and it was heartwarming to see.
I presented a TCA Award to Quiet On Set, which pleased me quite a bit. And I didn't choke, which pleased me even more.
Here is the complete winners list:
● Individual Achievement in Drama: Anna Sawai (SHŌGUN, FX)
● Individual Achievement in Comedy: Jean Smart (HACKS, HBO | MAX, 2021 Winner)
● Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: QUIET ON SET: THE DARK SIDE OF KIDS TV (ID)

AND THIS WEEKEND'S TCA PRESENTATIONS
Tomorrow is the CBS day. There will be panels for season two of Elsbeth and Tracker, as well for the new shows Matlock, George & Mandy's First Marriage, Poppa's House and NCIS: Origins. There will also be a screening of the pilot episode of The Summit. At this point, I don't have much in the way of one-on-ones set up. For whatever reason, CBS tends to be the hardest network for me to nail down for interviews. But I'm happy to see they are rolling out a substantive new primetime schedule.
Sunday is NBC's day and the panels include returning shows Found and The Irrational, as well as new shows Brilliant Minds, Happy's Place and St. Denis Medical. Monday is the first of two days from PBS and I'll have more about that then.
