Thanks. It's funny, I thought that was the case and in fact had stuck that in my newsletter. But I took it out because I couldn't find confirmation of it anywhere. Which might say something about how little attention it's received so far. And the press release I received was super confusing.
Viaplay did a presentation in front of the virtual TCA last January & I had the chance to see a couple of their shows. I liked what I saw and I'm a sucker in general for Nordic stuff.
Viaplay has been terrible about providing details about this, and I’ve pestered them repeatedly because I’m a tv scholar who works extensively on Scandi drama. I do know for a fact that Comcast customers have already had access to Viaplay, as I follow “GlobalTVGal” on Twitter, and she signed up back when they first started. As a matter of fact, on her blog she provided a full list of the series and films available when the service first became available, and you’re right, it’s super impressive. There are some DR gems that have never made it stateside (The Legacy, Liberty, The Left Wing Gang), both seasons of the breakout Norwegian hit Exit, and the final seasons of two Swedish shows that were initially available on other platforms, Thicker than blood & Love me. And this was just the start. Keeping my fingers crossed that they do strike a deal with Amazon and Apple to become available as channels, which is something they have done elsewhere (at least for Apple). Incidentally, their catalogue will be streamed for free on the Australian streaming site of SBS: they just struck an impressive deal with them.
Rick, Viaplay has already been available to XFinity customers at 4.99/month. My understanding is that they’re now launching a stand-alone direct-to-customer app, finally expanding their availability. I really hope that’s the case, because their catalogue is superb.
